EBONYI GOVT RECEIVES NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL’S UNITY TORCH

The unity torch of the National Sports Festival which comes up in Edo from March, 20 has been received by the Ebonyi Government.

The torch was presented to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Dr Kenneth Ugbala, by Mrs Jane Owoh, the South East Zonal Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports.

Owoh said during the occasion that torch symbolises the unity of the nation and that the sports festival was ‘around the corner’.

“The love and unity of the country is mainly shown through sports and we expect such bond to be strengthened during the festival.

She said that the has traveled round the country since President Muhammadu Buhari received it in January, touring states in the north east, north west and north central geo political zones.

“It is the turn of the south east now and the torch was received in Enugu yesterday and will leave for Abia after here.

The SSG who represented Governor David Umahi at the occasion, said that the state still believed in Nigeria as sports has kept the country together as one.

“The ethnicity belief of Nigerians has not interfered in sports and it will continue to keep the country together,” he said.

Ugbala said that the state government was commitment to make the state’s contingent excel at Edo 2020, as it was satisfied with the feats attained by the state ministry of youth and sports.

The state Commissioner for Youths Development and Sports, Mr Charles Akpuenika, thanked the state governor for his support to the ministry and pledged that the state will do well at the festival.

“The governor graciously approved funds for our participation at the sports festival’s zonal eliminations in Owerri and after the success we recorded, has approved our participation at the festival.

He said that the state’s athletes will soon embark on a closed camping programme and have been adequately motivated to succeed.
