Ebonyi New ALGON Chair Harps on Need for Strict Adherence to COVID- 19 Guidelines

The new Ebonyi State ALGON Chairman and Caretaker Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area, Mrs Amuche Otunta Godwin has called on the people of the Area to abide by all the precautionary Guidelines and instructions from WHO,NCDC and Ebonyi State Government to stay safe and contain the spread of COVID – 19 in the State.

Hon Amuche Otunta made this call on Saturday, 30th May 2020 during a COVID – 19 Stakeholders meeting held at the Council Hall,Afikpo.

According to her “I want our people to know that COVID-19 is real and let everyone stay safe by obeying the guidelines and directives issued by Ebonyi State Government, WHO and NCDC like Social distancing, regular washing of hands, the use of sanitisers as well as wearing of face masks.

She explained that concerted efforts of Traditional Rulers, Village Heads, Town Union Presidents, Security Agents and other Stakeholders are needed to achieve optimal results in the fight against COVID -19 in Afikpo North Local Government Area.

The Council Boss, who disclosed that the meeting became necessary so as to carry everybody along in the fight against the ravaging pandemic added ” we are dealing with an abnormal situation and so we need to take drastic measures in order to protect the lives of our people”.

She applauded the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr Dr David Nweze Umahi for his relentless efforts in the war against the novel disease and expressed confidence that the proactive measures he put in place would produce positive outcome.

In a remark, the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Emeka Sampson challenged the people of Afikpo North to volunteer information about anyone that sneaked into the Area from other States of the Federation and also those showing symptoms of COVID-19 assuring them that the disease is not a death sentence to warrant unnecessary panic.

In their separate speeches the Director of Public Health, Ebonyi State Ministry of Health,Dr Michael N.Urom and the NCDC RRT Head, Dr Sophia Usuwa expressed worry over the carefree attitude of some people who do not put on face masks despite Government efforts in that direction and enjoined the people of Afikpo North Local Government Area to play their own part of complementing the efforts of Governor David Umahi in containing the spread of COVID-19 by strictly adhering to NCDC and WHO guidelines and other instructions from Government at all levels.

On his part,the Rector of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana, Ven. Dr Ogbonnia Ibe Enwo who attended the meeting with Poly Unwana COVID-19 Team commended the Caretaker Chairman for hitting the ground running immediately after her swearing – In and urged her to keep the flag flying.He highlighted on the efforts made so far by the Poly Unwana COVID-19 Team in stepping down WHO and NCDC Guidelines and pledged the continued support of the Polytechnic Community to all the measures put in place by Ebonyi State Government under the able leadership of His Excellency,Chief David Umahi to contain the spread of the ravaging Coronavirus.

The Stakeholders meeting attracted the presence of Coordinators of Development Centres, Security Agents, Village Heads, Town Union Presidents, Youths/ Women Leaders and NCDC Officials who created more awareness to the Stakeholders of Afikpo North Local Government Area on how to stay safe in this era of the pandemic.
